Welcome to Motherhood! As a fellow mom of four, I know firsthand how amazing yet tiring those early newborn days can be. Through my own journey I’ve discovered some handy newborn baby tips that I wish I knew with my first.

Whether you’re a first time parent or expanding your brood, I hope these bits of mom wisdom help ease you into life with your precious little one.

First up – rest when baby rests. I know how tempting it is to tackle tasks when your little one dozes off, but sleep is scarce those first few months. Use naptimes to refuel yourself. The dishes can wait!

Ask for help. On difficult days don’t hesitate to call on your village – let grandma take the baby for a walk so you can shower or call a friend to drop off a meal. My motto is “it takes a village” – and it really does.

Finally, give yourself grace. Messes will be made, tears will fall, routines will be broken. This season is intense but also fleeting. Snuggle that sweet babe and take it one day at a time. You’ve got this mama!

1) Keep Baby Cozy with Safe Swaddling

Oh my, yes – swaddling is a must for newbies! As a mother of four, I’ve learned that tiny babies get cold so easily, even when it’s warm and sunny outside. Their little bodies just aren’t adjusted yet.

That’s why I always keep a stash of velcro swaddle blankets on hand! They make swaddling a cinch in the middle of the night (no complicated wrapping required). I simply place baby in the blanket, secure the velcro, and voilà – an instant swaddle.

I use swaddles day and night for at least the first three months. It helps regulate their temperature and keeps them feeling snug and secure like they did in the womb. My little ones tend to sleep longer when happily wrapped up.

1) Comfy Cubs Swaddle Blanket Baby Girl Boy Easy Adjustable 3 Pack Infant Sleep Sack Wrap Newborn Babies Small (0-3 Month)

KeaBabies 3-Pack Organic Baby Swaddle Sleep SacksKeaBabies 3-Pack Organic Baby Swaddle Sleep Sacks
KeaBabies 3-Pack Organic Baby Swaddle Sleep Sacks

Pro tip: I know some babies eventually try to break free from the swaddle as they get older. When that happens, try transitioning to a sleep sack with some arm room but still keeps them nice and cozy.

But those first few months? Swaddle away, mamas! Do whatever it takes to keep your little bundle warm and resting. Their little bodies will adjust…eventually!

2) Encourage Early Bedtimes

Here’s more tips on getting baby on an early bedtime schedule:

Great point about early bedtimes! I used to scoff at the idea too as a newbie first-time mom. Put them to bed when it’s still light out? No way!

But once baby #2 came along, I quickly learned the magic of an early, consistent bedtime routine. Now, my little ones get a bath by 6:30 pm, we read a story or two, I sing our special “goodnight song,” and they’re snoozing by 7 pm sharp.

Not only does it make them happier, calmer babies — it gives me a few blessed hours in the evening to eat dinner hot, get things done around the house, cuddle with my husband, and gasp – relax! Those early evenings are my saving grace as a parent.

So if you’re struggling with a fussy, overtired baby come nightfall, try slowly inching up their schedule by 15 minutes each night. Aim to have them snoozing an hour or two before you plan to get in bed.

You’ll be amazed at the difference it makes! Sleep begets sleep. Once you get baby used to a solid, early bedtime, the rest of your routine will likely fall right into place. Sweet dreams!

3) Try a White Noise Machine/Baby Sound Machine

I cannot rave enough about sound machines for little ones! With four kids running around my household, things can get noisy. But when it’s time for baby to wind down, we switch on our trusty shusher. It’s amazing how well it calms them (and blocks out big brother’s monster trucks upstairs!).

The steady “shhh” reminds babies of the womb noises they’re used to. And it signals to their little bodies that bedtime is here. I never put my littles down without our sound machine humming away. We bring it everywhere too – to Grandma’s, on vacation, you name it!

Pro tip: If you don’t want to buy a machine, there are great sound machine apps you can download to your phone too. I keep one cued up for middle-of-the-night soothing sessions. The white noise helps drown out any other disruptions so baby can slip easily back to dreamland.

Can you tell I’m a huge fan? Try out a shusher for a few nights and see if it helps your little sleeper. For most babies, it works like a charm! It’s the best $20-30 you’ll ever spend.

4) Establishing a Consistent Bedtime Routine

As a busy mom of four, I cannot stress enough the importance of a predictable bedtime routine. I remember with my firstborn feeling overwhelmed by the constant guesswork. When should we start getting ready for bed? What cues should I watch for? It felt like I was flying blind!

Over time and lots of trial and error, I crafted a routine that worked wonderfully for our family. Now, as soon as 6:30pm rolls around, my children know the drill and transition seamlessly into sleep mode.

We start by giving baby a nice warm bubbly bath – I add in a few drops of lavender oil which helps relax their little bodies. After diaper and jammies, we read a story or two, cuddle and sing our unique bedtime song. Lights out by 7pm sharp!

Sticking to this routine every evening made all the difference for my kids’ sleep and my own sanity! When children know what to expect, they tend to get drowsy more easily. Plus, you’ll learn to recognize tired cues to seamlessly move along each step.

So don’t be afraid to try different relaxation techniques to make bedtime soothing. The routine itself is what matters most. Discover what works best and stick with it!

I use lavender foaming Bubble Bath before sleep time.

You can also use diffuser and put some drop of essential oils for sleep.

5) Embrace Baby Carrier

Absolutely – baby carriers are a lifesaver, especially if you have multiple kiddos running around! I never would’ve survived all those early months without my trusty carriers.

When my babies were tiny, wearing them close soothed them and helped me get stuff done with free hands. I could cook, clean, play with the big kids – all while cuddling my little one. It truly takes a village, but a good carrier helps you feel like a one-woman village!

I’ve also found that some babies just crave that skin-to-skin nurturing. My little guy would fall asleep instantly all curled up against me in the Infantino Carrier. It was the only way I could get household tasks checked off! Plus going for walks outdoors with them snuggled close helped us both relax.

If you’re on the fence about baby-wearing, I cannot recommend it enough, mama! Do some research to find a carrier that fits your body type comfortably. It may take some adjusting to get the hang of but trust me, it’ll make your days smoother. When in doubt, just strap that baby on and get moving!

6) Stock Up on Zipper Pajamas

Such great advice! As a mom, I’ve learned to choose practicality over cuteness when it comes to baby clothes. Especially pajamas – it’s zippers all the way for us too!

Those snuggly footed sleepers with zip fronts make midnight diaper changes so much quicker and less disruptive. No fiddling around with a dozen tiny buttons when I’m half asleep and baby is writhing around!

I definitely have some adorable button-up jammies that are reserved for special occasions and daytime wear when we aren’t rushed. But at night, I stick to simple zip-up pajamas only.

They make diaper checks and middle-of-the-night clothing changes a breeze! Plus, choosing fabrics with a bit of stretch helps get baby in and out without the dreaded tight neck hole tugging. No one wants to see mama hulk out!

So do yourself (and baby) a favor – invest in some comfy footie zipper pajamas.prioritize those over fancy snaps and buttons for hassle-free sleep all night long. You’ll be so glad you did!

7) Footed Pants Are Essential

Oh yes, footed pants are clutch for little babes! As the mama of multiple kiddos, I quickly learned that socks are pointless in those early months. Tiny baby feet + loose socks = an endless cycle of kicking them off and rummaging through the car seat to find them! No thanks.

Instead, we stick to footie pajamas or one-piece outfits with built-in feet. Whether we’re lounging at home or out and about, footed gear keeps their toes all nice and toasty without the hassle. No more worrying about keeping track of tiny socks!

Even on special occasions, I search for fancier footed pants or soft booties that stay put. Not only are they way cuter than slipping loose socks onto a squirming newborn, but they also make diaper changes much quicker without having to fiddle with coordinating extra pieces.

So do yourself a favor and stock up on the footed variety right from the start! Check brands like Burt’s Bees and Gerber for lots of great options with folds over feet. Your future self will thank you when you’re a sleep-deprived mama. Less wrestling tiny socks = a win in my book!

8) Seek Breastfeeding Support Upfront

If you plan to breastfeed, one of the best things you can do is surround yourself with support and education early on. Every feeding journey is different, so arming yourself with knowledge and backup will make all the difference.

I recommend taking a prenatal breastfeeding course like this one while pregnant. Understanding proper technique, what to expect in those first few weeks, and how to troubleshoot challenges will set you up for success.

It also connects you to lactation professionals and support groups. We all need a village, especially brand new mamas! I found it so reassuring to have experts and other nursing mothers I could turn to with questions or struggles along the way.

While breastfeeding can be immensely rewarding, it can also be quite difficult as both baby and mom learn. Be patient with yourself and don’t hesitate to ask for help when needed. Whether you nurse for one month or one year, feeding your baby is always an act of love.

Lean on your support network and schedule consultations with lactation specialists even before giving birth. Having that wisdom and guidance in place is the best gift you can give yourself and your little one! This journey is so worth it.

9) Keep Baby Close By With A Co-Sleeper

Whether you choose to fully co-sleep or prefer your own space, I cannot recommend a co-sleeper bassinet enough, especially for the first 3-4 months. Having your newborn nearby makes those whirlwind middle-of-the-night feeds, changes and comfort sessions much smoother. No stumbling down dark halls or reaching blindly into a far-off crib!

As a c-section mama of multiples, lifting baby in and out of a nursery bassinet those early weeks was nearly impossible. Our co-sleeper attaching right to the bed was a sanity saver! But even for vaginal delivery, keeping them within arm’s reach helps everyone sleep better.

You’ll likely wake more easily to their fusses and feeds. And something about having that tiny human right next to you lessens any new parent worries. I found myself checking to make sure my little one was still breathing about 100 times a night!

So consider either a portable co-sleeper bassinet, a Pack N Play with bassinet insert, or even sidecaring a crib. Keep the early months simple and let baby stay nestled safely by your side as you both adjust. Before you know it, everyone will be getting more rest and ready for their own room!

Here are some that we love and used below:

10) Warm Up The Sleep Space

One of my top tips for smoothly transitioning a newborn from cuddling you to snoozing solo is warming up their sleep space beforehand. After being all bundled up in your arms, that cold crib mattress can shock their system and wake them right up!

I like to prep my baby’s bassinet or crib by laying in a soft microwavable heating pad or a warm water bottle wrapped in a towel for a few minutes. This mimics mama’s warm embrace they’ve gotten used to.

Right before I’m ready to set down a sleepy babe, I remove the heat pad and quickly replace it with some cozy blankets. Then I gently lay my little one down while shushing and patting for further calming.

Having that pre-warmed environment helps promote steady sleep, especially during naps which can already be short! It tricks their cute little body into thinking they’re still being held. No sudden temp change to disrupt the peace.

So grab a safe heating pad and give it a try anytime your arms need a break but baby still wants that heat. We can’t hold them forever as much as we’d like to! This simple hack can help the transition be a peaceful one.

11) Add a Downstairs Changing Station

One thing I quickly learned as a mom sprinting up the stairs dozen of times a day for diaper duty – have backup change stations on each level! My legs got a serious workout those first months until we wised up.

Now, I keep a handy portable changing mat with supplies stored downstairs. It has saved my sanity not having to run all the way to the nursery for a quick wet diaper or outfit change on repeat. Anything to preserve this mama’s energy!

Even just having an extra crib pad or foldable change station to lay them on works wonders. I can change baby quickly and get back to playing with my other little ones. No more disruptions or trailing a screaming, dirty baby behind me on the stairs!

If you have multiple floors in your home, add a makeshift changing area downstairs too. Keep it simple – just include the essentials like diapers, wipes, change of clothes and a clean surface. Keep it handy for those unexpected blow-outs or when you need wiggle room away from the “official” changing table. You’ll be so glad you did!

12) Banish Blowout Stains

Oh, the inevitable poosplosions and their pesky stains! As a seasoned mom of four, I’ve tried endless stain removers over the years. But I’ve finally found a miracle worker that rescues even the worst blowout remnants from pajamas and onesies alike.

Introducing my BFF when it comes to stains – OxiClean gel sticks! This stuff works fabulously to lift poop, pee, spit-up and more from baby clothes with just a quick scrub. For white clothes, just rub it in, let sit 5 minutes, then toss in the wash. The stains disappear like magic!

For colors, the key is still treating ASAP but washing immediately before the gel sets too long. I’ve had good luck gently rubbing it in and washing right after. But as always, test an inconspicuous area first if unsure.

While blowouts and their aftermath are inevitable, trashing cute clothes doesn’t have to be! Keep some stain sticks at all changing stations and even stash one in the diaper bag. Attack messes quickly and let the gentle oxygen power rescue the outfit. Then you can focus on more important things, like cuddling that sweet baby…stench-free!

13) Prepare For Anything With A Car Emergency Kit

As a busy mom of four, I am ALWAYS on the go between school drop-offs, sports practices, playdates and more. That’s why I consider a stuffed emergency bag in the car an absolute necessity! When you have little ones, you just never know what you’ll need in a pinch out and about.

The basics like extra diapers, wipes, changes of clothes, snacks, etc. are clutch of course. But my lifesaver item is keeping a roll of plastic grocery bags in my center console and diaper bag. They have saved many outfits and car seats after explosive diarrhea disasters en route!

Diaper Bag Backpack

I also stash handy extras like a portable changing pad, nursing cover, manual pump, pacifiers, bottle, baby meds, and teethers. For nursing moms especially, keeping your nursing pillow within reach is a game changer for feeds on the fly!

No matter your destination, having backup supplies helps every mama feel prepared for anything when out and about. Diaper explosions, growth spurts, fevers – bring it on! This mama is ready thanks to my well-stocked emergency kit. Just throw in whatever you rely on most for your unique baby. You’ll breathe easier!

14) Get a diaper subscribe and save subscription from Amazon!

Amazon is a lifesaver for a new mom! I honestly don’t know how I survived without it with my first baby! Get a diaper subscription to save you money and time running out to the store!

15) Gear Up For Colic Witching Hours

As the mama of four colicky babies, take it from me – those dreaded witching hours are no joke! When colic strikes with painful gas, nonstop cries, and that bright red face, it can be stressful and disheartening. But you can get through it!

Having the right tools on hand makes all the difference. Keeping gripe water in every room is clutch. The natural herbs and sodium bicarbonate help to quickly soothe baby’s angry tummy. Such a relief!

I also suggest probiotic drops to balance their gut, tummy massage with lavender oil, warm baths, baby carriers for motion, and trying different bottles/nipples if bottle feeding. Staying calm and taking breaks is hugely important too!

Colic is temporary even though it doesn’t feel like it. You’ve got this! Arm yourself with solutions, pep talks from fellow parents, noise-canceling headphones when needed, and trust that it will pass. We’ll get through the witching hour storm together!

16) Give Yourself Some Serious Nap Time

Bringing home a new baby is such an exciting and challenging time! As a mom of four, I’ve learned a few tips along the way that I want to share with other new moms.

First, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Having a network of family, friends or neighbors that can pitch in with meals, errands, or just holding the baby while you shower can make all the difference in the world.

I remember after my first three babies were born, my husband had to go right back to work and I felt so overwhelmed trying to care for a newborn and toddlers solo. Don’t try to do it all yourself – ask others to tag team and give you a much needed break.

Second, sleep when baby sleeps! I know it’s tempting to use naptime to get things done around the house, but rest should be your top priority as a new mom. Take the opportunity to recharge whenever possible so you avoid burnout. I was stubborn about powering through but quickly learned with baby #4 that sleep is precious.

Motherhood often feels like a marathon, not a sprint. Building your village and catching some zzz’s will help you cross the finish line! Wishing all new moms the best during this special time.

17) Introduce Bottles Early for Breastfed Babies Heading to Daycare

Making the transition back to work after maternity leave can be tough on both mom and baby. As a breastfeeding mama, I learned the hard way that you need to start offering bottles as early as possible if you plan to pump at work.

With my first daughter, I exclusively breastfed her for the first few months. But when it came time for her first bottle, she refused! Those first few weeks of daycare were rough trying to get her to take pumped milk from a bottle. Don’t make my mistake – start early!

Around 3-4 weeks when breastfeeding is well established, begin offering a bottle once a day. I’d recommend dad or another caregiver gives the bottle so baby doesn’t confuse it with nursing from mom. You may only get a few ounces at first as your supply regulates, so use a Haakaa or pump if you can to stockpile some milk. If you need help boosting supply, there are great lactation supplement options too.

Starting bottle feeding early helps your baby get used to taking both breast and bottle. This will make the transition back to work go much smoother for both mama and baby!

We’ve tried multiple bottle types with success, but these are my top picks that most breastfed babies will take to easily.

18) Stock Up on Multipurpose Coconut Oil for Baby’s First Year

Coconut oil is a wonder product that every new mom needs on hand during baby’s first year. I’ve relied on that big jar of coconut oil more times than I can count! Here are some of my top uses for it:

a) Cradle cap – Gently rub coconut oil on baby’s scalp to soften and remove crusty cradle cap. The natural antibacterial properties help clear it up.

b) Diaper rash – Create a soothing diaper cream by mixing coconut oil with zinc oxide. The coconut oil helps moisturize and protect delicate skin.

c) Eczema and skin irritation – Rub on areas of eczema, dry skin or irritation to calm and hydrate. The lauric acid in coconut oil has anti-inflammatory effects.

d) Yeast infections – Apply coconut oil topically 2-3 times a day to help clear up stubborn yeast diaper rashes. It’s a natural antifungal!

e) Thrush – Swab some coconut oil inside baby’s mouth to help alleviate painful thrush symptoms.

f) Dry skin and massage – Use coconut oil for baby massages or after bath time to moisturize and nourish skin.

Coconut oil is affordable, natural, and so versatile for baby care. Make sure to stock up on a big jar – you’ll find yourself reaching for it constantly! It’s become an indispensable staple in my nursery.

You are a week closer to holding your little one in your own hands. This time of pregnancy is considered to be the easiest time to go through. It might not be true for you, however as you have made it through till here you can go along further too. We will look at what exciting things the little one is up to this week.

How Much Are 15 Weeks Pregnant In Months?

Wondering 15 weeks pregnant is how many months? You’re in the month 4 of your pregnancy! That is exactly 3 months 3 weeks.

15 Weeks Pregnant: What To Expect?
15 Weeks Pregnant: What To Expect?

15 Weeks Pregnant Symptoms

The second trimester is marked with having high energy and respectively high libido though this may not apply to a significant number of expecting women. The symptoms for the week are described below.

1) Low Libido

The sex drive may increase in the second trimester and it is perfectly safe to indulge in sexual activities unless advised against it. However, it would be totally fine if you are not up to it while dealing with all the other symptoms.

2) Swollen Gums

The effect of hormones can also be seen on dental health. Swelling of gums is quite normal. The gums become extra sensitive. If not taken care of, this may lead to a condition called Gingivitis.

3) Nosebleeds

The increased sensitivity of nasal passages with all the extra blood flowing through every part of body may cause you to deal with occasional nosebleeds. Also, there is swelling of blood vessels and increased mucus production causing pregnancy rhinitis, commonly known as stuffy nose.

4) Shortness of Breath

As uterus increases in size, pressure on lungs increases. When you breathe, lungs are unable to expand as easily and hence it may lead to shortness of breath.

5) Heartburn & Flatulence

Oh these hormones are to be blamed for everything! Symptoms like heartburn and gas may remain with you for the larger part of pregnancy.

6) Varicose Veins

The bluish streaks across your body are nothing but veins swelled in size due to increase in blood volume called varicose veins.

7) Round Ligament Pain

• Avoid doing any physically strenuous work. Perform deep-breathing exercises which will help in breathing more easily.
• Try to include more fibers in diet that will help you with gas and indigestion. Avoid consuming foods that may increase the probability of having heartburn like spicy food, acidic food or fired food.
• Though varicose veins cannot be prevented, you can try to decrease the severity of the symptom. Do not stand or sit for too long. Take short breaks in between and walk around. Also keep your feet elevated while sitting whenever possible.
Eat small meals regularly. Always keep hydrated. Keep healthy snacks handy. Whenever you feel dizzy, sit down or lie down if possible until the dizziness goes away. Try not to get up in a rush after sitting/lying down for a while.

Changes in Mother’s Body

  • The uterus is now growing out of the pelvic cavity. The rate of growth is different for everyone and is also different for each pregnancy for the same woman. Also, if this is not your first pregnancy, then you MAY show earlier as compared to your first pregnancy.
  • The top of the uterus now lies around 4 inches below the belly button.
  • Your body’s center of gravity is changing with respect to uterine growth. You may become clumsier by each passing week than before.

Weight Gain

The suggested weight gain range by week 15 of pregnancy based on BMI is given in the below table.

BMI Category

Weight gain by Week 15

pounds

kilograms

Underweight

3.1 to 7.0

1.4 to 3.2

Normal

2.9 to 6.7

1.3 to 3.0

Overweight

2.1 to 5.9

1.0 to 2.7

Obese

1.8 to 5.6

0.8 to 2.5

If the weight is deviating too much from the normal weight gain range, you should first consult your doctor before taking any measures.

Ultrasound in Week 15 of Pregnancy

  • There will be no ultrasound appointment this week unless there are some complications and your doctor has scheduled one.
  • Also, if you had opted for amniocentesis to be performed in this week then ultrasound scanning would be required.
  • Amniocentesis is a diagnostic test for neural tube defects and chromosomal abnormalities.
  • Alternatively, you can also opt for Multiple Marker Screening (or triple or quad screening). This test involves removing blood sample. The levels of AFP, hCG, Estriol (and Inhibin-A in a quad screen) are measured.
  • Multiple Marker Screening or MMS is done to screen for risk of neural tube defects and some chromosomal abnormalities.
  • MMS is a screening test; so if the results show that there is some risk to the fetus then you may/may not opt for more confirmatory amniocentesis. Ultrasound scan is also performed and results of the scan and MMS are combined to give a final result.
  • Sex of the baby may/ may not be determined accurately so it would be better to wait for a few more weeks.

Warning Signs in Week 15 of Pregnancy

  • Severe headache, blurry vision, nausea and dizziness are signs of high blood pressure and can also indicate early pre-eclampsia.
  • Pain and burning sensation while urinating are signs of an underlying infection.
  • Severe nausea and vomiting may lead to dehydration which poses a risk to overall health.
  • Thin and clear vaginal discharge might indicate leaking amniotic fluid.
  • Abdominal cramping or lower back pain with or without vaginal bleeding.
  • Colored and/or foul smelling vaginal discharge is an indication of genital tract infection.

Tips for 15 Weeks Pregnant

  • Maintain an exercise routine. This will help you to deal with the physical stress of pregnancy, and also in maintaining health after pregnancy. You can choose any form of exercise like yoga, pelvic floor exercises, etc.
  • Avoid any strenuous exercise routines like the one associated with contact sports, etc.
  • Now that the bump is showing, you have to take extra care while driving. Always wear the seat belt. The seat belt should go around your lap rather than abdomen. The upper part of the belt should go around the top of stomach or between the breasts.
  • You should try sleeping on your side (the left one preferably) which is considered to be a healthy sleeping position. This would allow easy blood flow and you may get a restful sleep for a while.
  • Sleeping on stomach is to be strictly avoided as it will put undue pressure on the uterus. Sleeping on back puts pressure on lower body veins via the uterus.
  • To help you sleep on side, you can extra pillows to give support to your body or you may also invest in a pregnancy pillow.
  • You should see to it that all necessary vitamins are included in your daily intake in proper amounts. If not, then take prescribed supplements.

Tips for the Partner

  • If you see that your partner is having trouble sleeping then try to help out in some way.
  • You may offer to her a massage before going to bed.
  • You may also/alternatively offer to adjust her pillows for her before sleeping.
  • These small acts are greatly appreciated even if not verbally expressed.

The time is passing by too quickly! There is so much left to do before the baby comes might be the thought constantly in your mind. Well, you will always find that time is too short to do anything. However, if it makes you feel better then make a list of everything that you would like to do and discuss it with your partner or any other person that you trust. Also, indulge in activities that will help you take your mind of the stressful thoughts. At the end, try to enjoy this phase of pregnancy.

Anime girl names have become increasingly popular choices for baby names in recent years, reflecting the growing influence of Japanese animation around the world.

Anime, or Japanese animation, often features female characters with unique, melodic names that differ greatly from traditional Western names. While Japan has over 300,000 personal names on official record, certain Anime girl names seem to resonate more internationally.

Names like Sakura, Hana, Yui, and Miku can evoke images of the cute, spunky, and fiercely loyal Anime heroines that have captured the hearts of millions of fans. The visual depictions and rich characterization of these Anime girls have made their exotic names all the more appealing for parents seeking a special name for their daughter.

As Anime continues to permeate mainstream culture, Anime girl names that evoke fantasy, strength, and even a touch of Japanese heritage are likely to gain traction across the world. This blend of aesthetics and heritage makes Anime girl names an intriguing choice.

Phew! It took a long time to compile middle names for baby girl but I hope it’s worth it! 🙂

It’s trendy to choose more than one or two middle names for baby girl. The first name is usually chosen with great focus and effort. First name is typically the most important but middle name cannot be neglected as it is a part of the complete name.

1) History

Giving middle name dates back to Roman times. People with bigger names or more than two names were highly respected in society. The first name is called personal name and the last name represents family name or surname.

2) What do middle names represent?

Middle name can be your family’s surname or it can be a name that is important for you and your family.  It can also be a name that is used to express virtues like truth, trust, or justice.  Some parents choose traditional names that might be old-fashioned as a middle name.

Parents nowadays prefer names with beautiful meanings. Some parents use a middle name to honor family and cultural heritage. In the United States, traditional names have usually three names.  Some families may have a tradition of two middle names or they may prefer keeping only one name.

3) New way of giving unique middle names

In some parts of the country depending on cultural traditions, the mother’s name is given to a child as a middle name. Some parents blend the sounds of both parent’s names or use names with the same meaning as parent’s names for their kids.

Middle names can sometimes be a name of the famous inspirational figures or celebrities parents adore. In the 1990s baby names were gender-specific. Today we find gender-neutral names. Both boys and girls can be named with the same name that represents the family culture of equality.

People usually end up neglecting the middle and give importance to the first name as it is used to refer to an individual all the time. Here are some of the strong, unique, and beautiful names that may fit your baby’s middle name.

Inducing labor (labor induction) is a procedure in which a doctor or midwife uses methods to stimulate uterine contractions to help go into labor.

You may wonder how does suddenly the woman goes into labor and pain as they show in movies. In real life, the climax is not that spontaneous, and instead, a woman goes into labor gradually. If a pregnant mother does not undergo natural labor then doctors adopt techniques for inducing labor artificially.

By the end of the second trimester, you start experiencing what are known as Braxton Hicks. They are false contractions that prepare your muscles for the day. As your due date approaches the contractions to become stronger and frequent. And finally when the contractions are rhythmic and pulsating then you reach active labor.

The screaming and pain of active labor are because of rapid contraction of the uterine muscles. Oxytocin hormone is responsible for these strong contractions that push the baby out.

What is inducing labor?

Labor induction is artificial or medically intervened start of labor. The reasons can be paused labor, fetal distress, or unconsciousness of the mother.

Some women willingly opt for such procedures that may even require artificial rupture of membranes. In that case, the procedure is elective. Nowadays it is common to induce labor to prevent long labor time.

Inducing labor: When and How Labor Is Induced
Inducing labor: When and How Labor Is Induced

Reasons for inducing labor

As mentioned above there are many reasons that answer why to induce labor. When do you need inducing labor? If the labor ceases or when the contractions don’t pick up you need induction.

1) Fetal distress

If there is any sign of the fetus being under stress then the doctor immediately does labor induction. It is possible that the baby is not receiving enough oxygen or the cord is choking.

2) Labor complications

When the mother’s blood pressure rises up or she has preeclampsia then inducing labor is common. It is a precautionary measure to prevent the death of either of them.

3) Prolonged gestational period

If the baby remains inside the womb for more than 40 weeks induced labor will prevent mishaps. After 40 weeks the babyfaces nutritional deprivation. The placenta is not enough to meet the need.

4) Elective induction of labor

If the mother wants to have quick childbirth she can get induced labor.

5) VBAC

In cases where a woman tries to give birth vaginally after the C section, she does a TOLAC. The trial of labor after cesarean may need naturally inducing labor.

6) No labor contractions long after mucus plug fall off

If the pregnancy water breaks and mucus plug comes off but labor does not start then doctors induce labor. The period of waiting after pregnant water leaking is about 24-48 hours.

7) Uterine problems

The infectious uterus or compromised uterus need inducing labor

8) Emergency

In certain cases of unexpected events during labor doctor administers medications for inducing labor. The birth process becomes faster and is helpful in saving lives.

How to induce labor?

Ways to induce labor can either be natural or those that need medical intervention. Either way, inducing labor is not better than natural labor when there is a low-risk healthy pregnancy.

American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommend that induction of labor should only be when there is some risk in waiting. When the risks of continuing naturally outweigh the risk of inducing labor only then doctors resort to it.

How to Induce labor?

Naturally, the hormone oxytocin releases in great amounts during childbirth. It is responsible for rhythmic contractions of the uterus muscles.

You may have read about Pitocin administration during labor. What is Pitocin? It is artificial oxytocin.

1) Using medications such as Pitocin and prostaglandins

Vaginal suppositories of prostaglandin induce labor in around 12 hours. When the prostaglandins placed in the vagina reach the circulation they lead to contractions. Syntocinon and Pitocin are medicinal names of oxytocin. Pregnant women get the artificial oxytocin through IV. They may also take oxytocin through inhalation.

Earlier it was a notion that artificial oxytocin does not cross the blood-brain barrier. Thus the emotional or mental benefits of soothing and inducing drowsiness would be absent. But after research, it was clear that oxytocin through IV or snorted reaches the brain too.

2) Rupture of membranes

The amniotic sac ruptures to allow the baby’s head to lodge in the cervix. When the head reaches the lower bottom it sends feedback for the release of oxytocin.

A popular method of inducing labor is to rupture the membrane and release the water. A sterile pincer or needle pricks the membrane which bursts and the baby’s head positions for labor.

Some doctors discourage artificial rupture of membranes. It can lead to infections and is not a good choice. Unless a doctor does it you must never try rupturing the membrane yourself.

3) Nipple stimulation

Inducing labor at home requires natural ways. The artificial oxytocin or rupturing membranes for labor is not safe at home. Nipple stimulation to induce labor is the easiest way to naturally induce labor. You can use a breast pump or your hands to stimulate the nipples.

How does nipple stimulation induce labor? The same hormone that is responsible for the induction of labor contractions also initiates breastfeeding. When the baby suckles the nipples the milk ejection reflex starts with oxytocin. So the nipple stimulation is a way to induce oxytocin release.

4) Warm water

Since earlier days doulas and midwives use warm water for a home birth. In that case, it is for avoiding infections and feeling cold. But warm water can lead to labor and hot water bath is not safe for pregnant women. When you deliberately want to induce labor soaking in a warm water bath is an option.

5) Balloon catheter to induce labor

Pumping to induce labor using a balloon catheter is another method doctors use for labor induction. A balloon placed inside expands when air pumps in it. The pressure makes the contractions become stronger to expel it out. This is not safe for inducing labor yourself. At hospitals, doctors know the extent to which pumping is safe.

How to induce labor at home?

You will have to use natural remedies to induce labor at home. It is not safe to rupture membranes. But stripping membrane near the vagina can naturally induce labor. Once your midwife is sure of the necessary dilation you can try induction of labor. Massage and warm water are equally effective in enhancing the strength of contractions.

How to naturally induce labor?

Stimulating your nipples is one of the ways of inducing labor naturally. Other methods of natural labor induction are safe for a home birth. The best way to get labor started is nipple stimulation.

1) Walkaround

When you go to a birth center it is not a single shift process. You might stop feeling any contractions after a period. So you will watch TV or walk around inside the birthing center. Do not feel the slightest disappointment because it is completely normal to have intermittent pauses. Exercise and walking around can help reduce the stress that causes stiffening of muscles.

2) Try herbal remedies for inducing labor

Some midwives bring herbal supplements to help you through labor. You can drink such preparations to induce labor. Don’t hurry down a whole lot of volume. Just sipping some of it might do the trick.

You can also have some spicy food during pregnancy. Now that you want labor onset there is no stopping from popping in your favorite food.

What should you eat before being induced? Avoid eating too much because you can vomit due to an unstable gut. Women must avoid eating from the night before labor.

Raspberry tea, black Cohosh, and castor oil consumption is a popular natural way to induce labor. Be careful with the herb you use because there can be side effects.

3) Make love

You had to avoid intercourse for preventing early labor. Now you must have it to induce labor. However, this is not for those women whose pregnant water is leaking. It can lead to infections. Also, women with low lying placenta may not find it pleasant to make love at this stage.

4) Stripping off the membrane

Not like rupturing the membrane but you can open the seal a bit. Your midwife has enough skill to do this at home. All that you need is to remove the membrane covering the cervix. Make sure the water does not break or gush out. If that happens you need to shift to the birth center or hospital. When the water breaks naturally there is only a span of about 24 hours until delivery.

After stripping membranes examination of the vagina becomes risky. Do not touch it and only use a hand mirror or ask someone else to look for dilation.

There can be spotting and cramps after the step. Make sure that the bleeding is not severe. If you bleed heavily then you will need to call the doctor immediately.

How long does it take to have a baby after being induced?

Nipple stimulation labor or natural ways might make you take longer than medications. It is safe to go for natural labor induction when it is necessary. Most women deliver within few hours after medical induction of labor. Some may still take 1-2 days after getting medications.

How long does it take for Pitocin to induce labor?

Pitocin induction is mostly for women who stop contracting after reaching the first stage of labor. After getting induced Pitocin takes few hours to induce active labor.

In most cases, labor starts after 6-12 hours from taking Pitocin. The drug dilates the cervix at a rate of 1cm an hour. Prostaglandins can take a period of 12 hours.

Is it safe to induce labor?

Naturally inducing labor that does not involve interfering with the organs is safe.

Can you induce labor yourself? Yes, you can try the natural methods at home for inducing contractions. But there are many benefits of waiting for natural labor.

Why wait for natural labor?

  1. Natural toning of muscles allows more effective contractions
  2. Better development of the baby
  3. Lesser chance of c section and delivery complications
  4. Reduced risk of infections for both and disease such as jaundice in newborn

What are the risks of inducing labor?

After inducing labor you are at a higher risk of getting an emergency C-section. When you decide to get labor induction then you must know that it can lead to a sudden panic situation.

  1. A longer hospital stay is probable if you need a C-section.
  2. Other than that there is a risk of getting infections.
  3. Premature rupture of membrane or placental abruption can lead to severe bleeding.
  4. Is it more painful to be induced? Women who undergo inducing labor need pain killers more often than those who wait for natural onset. After induction of labor, one is more likely to request an epidural.
  5. Premature induction of labor at 37 weeks is potentially dangerous for the fetus. There can be development lags and cause breathing problems for the baby.

A woman who previously got a C-section must not elect for inducing labor. Reasons not to induce labor include being more than 40 weeks pregnant. It is possible that some babies take longer or some miscalculation exits.

A woman might find it more comfortable to be inside her known environment, like mamma birdy in her nest, giving birth to her baby. With the help of a midwife and labor coach, it is possible for anyone to have a home birth.

The first birth on the planet and subsequent birth for ages were home births. But that does not imply that this process is a stone-age practice and outdated. People born in the time period before the development of vaccines or labor wards were not all infected with diseases.

At present, around 1-3% of births in different regions are at-home deliveries. Pregnancy complications make a hospital delivery preferable but do not nullify the safety of delivering a baby at home. Infections and neonatal stress can happen anywhere and midwifery includes bringing all necessary equipment.

Is it legal to have a home birth?

In some places, law codes consider having a home birth along with a midwife is not legal. However, having a home birth without any planned assistant is legal.

The stories of women giving birth in cabs or bathroom floors are not uncommon. And declaring this illegal is not possible for obvious reasons. But there are many countries that totally sanction having a delivery at home as legal.

Home birth: Can I give birth at home?
Home birth: Can I give birth at home?

Who can give birth at home?

A home birth suits a woman who has a low-risk pregnancy and is carrying a single child. In the case of twins, the chance of complications from giving birth at home is higher. It is because the second baby may need the use of suction or artificial assistance for delivery.

Here is a list of factors to help you decide:

  1. A low-risk healthy pregnancy with all development milestones achieved.
  2. A mother wanting to have a natural delivery calls for a home birth as the first choice.
  3. No risk of infections such as HIV or STDs that can transfer to the baby.
  4. Normally proceeding stages of labor.
  5. A birthing center or hospital not far off than 30 miles assures an alternative at hand.
  6. Desire to have family members along during delivery.
  7. You don’t want to have epidural, pain killers, or artificial assistance in labor.

What are the reasons to not give birth at home?

The reasons for avoiding a home birth can be because you are having infections, preeclampsia, or diabetes. There are situations where the birth partner is not ready. It may be because they are apprehensive of the safety or find it messy. You can convince them of it after you learn about it. Midwives can highlight the real aspects and benefits of delivering a baby at home.

Other actual reasons for not having a birth at home are high blood pressure or a history of preterm labor. If the mother is obese or aged then the doctors don’t wait for natural labor and plan a c section. Similarly, for mothers who have had a previous C section, a VBAC at home is not completely safe.

Giving birth at home

Who can have a home birth?

Any woman who wants to give birth inside her house can opt for it. Previous pregnancy complications do not imply that you cannot have a second birth at home.

It is also possible that you shift to a hospital even after trying to give birth at home. But if you are living in a remote area with limited access to facilities and far away from the hospital then switching in between won’t be likely. In that case, it is not safe to have your delivery at home.

To give birth at home you will have to hire a midwife and keep in touch. She will be there with you when you feel labor onset. A doula can help you if the midwife is not available before and after childbirth.

How can you have birth at Home?

You can either hire an independent midwife or contact a home birth service provider. She will discuss with you, all possible situations that may arise during delivery and your choices. You can chalk out a birth plan and the necessary steps you both will be taking.

How much does a home birth cost?

The midwife’s charges may vary but giving birth at home can cost $3000 or £5000.

Who all are there during a home birth?

The midwife might have a doula along who will set the bathtub and later clean it. They may even help you breastfeed colostrum to your baby. There are generally two women to help you during birth.

The midwife checks your dilation and ability to adjust to labor changes. She may either stay with you during your last stages of pregnancy or coordinate over the phone. Once active labor starts, the midwife will not leave you until delivery.

What things do you need for homebirth?

The midwife will bring along all the things you need for homebirth. The cost of it may either be included or added later on. You can buy the things needed for home birth yourself also. There are not very elaborate tools and instead of basic comforting items and cover-ups.

Your midwife will bring all the stuff beforehand and you can keep them anywhere cool and dry. It is possible that you already have the things needed for a natural home birth.

  1. Cover-ups to prevent your birthing equipment to get dirty
  2. Old towels that are soft to wipe and probably throw away
  3. Dustbin polybags enough to collect all rubbish
  4. Comforting snacks and drinks, scented candles
  5. Birthing stool or squatting mattress
  6. A bowl or polybag to collect in case you throw up
  7. Light blanket and room heater if it is cold
  8. Baby’s necessities like soft towel, clothing, baby wash, etc.
