PCOS, septate uterus, ovulation abnormalities, and problems in the Fallopian tubes are top causes of female infertility. The physiological issues combined with stress become barriers to conceiving.

There are ways to prevent female infertility such as a healthy diet and exercise. However, congenital causes of female infertility require extensive treatment such as surgery.

Sometimes surgery itself can cause scars and tissue damage that leads to recurrent miscarriages.

Top causes of female infertility

The causes of female infertility are:

Causes of Female Infertility
Causes of Female Infertility

1) Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

A significant population of women in the age group of 15-40 years has the problem of PCOS. PCOS causes cysts in the ovaries.

The cysts impair and block the reproductive path and hence could be a cause of female infertility.

Women suffering from PCOS have irregular menses and dysmenorrhoea (painful menses). They also tend to have masculine characters like facial and body hair. PCOS is one of the causes of female infertility.

2) Ovulation defects

Every woman has two ovaries. Ovaries are the egg storehouses which mature one ova at a time.  Ovaries are located in your abdominal cavity.

Ovarian defects include many disorders which affect the proper functioning of them. These could be anything from ovarian cysts, ovarian cancer, regressed ovaries (insufficient eggs and reduced size) to anovulation (eggs not released).

Genital defects like Turner’s Syndrome or other unexplainable reasons or even removal of ovaries can also result in infertility.

3) Tubal infertility and defects

Blocked fallopian tubes (the passage from ovaries to the womb – uterus) could act as a barrier and prevent the egg from getting fertilized by the sperm.

The fertilization takes place in the tubes, and then the egg reaches the womb. So the tubal defects prevent the first step. If a woman has a tubal defect, she needs to get an IVF treatment as fertilization is possible only outside the body.

4) Uterine defects make women infertile

Uterine defects like divided uterus or dislocated uterus can also make a woman infertile. Around 20% of women have the retroverted uterus.

Some women might have a uterus that looks perfectly fine but become unstable when the baby cells (embryo) implantation.

Most of these won’t show any external symptoms and will come to know only when they try to get pregnant.

5) Pelvic Inflammatory Diseases may cause infertility in women

Infections of the reproductive tract or sexually transmitted diseases like Gonorrhea cause Pelvic Inflammatory Disease.

The lining of the pelvis is unsuitable for any reproductive processes and hence lead to infertility.

Hence it is essential to have protected sex until you find the right partner.

6) Genetic infertility in women

Genetic disorders in women also cause infertility. Everything might be fine like the uterus (womb) and the ovulation process, yet the woman is infertile.

There are unexplainable cases when a reproductively healthy couple cannot conceive. Here is when we start believing that something called fate and luck does exist.

Nevertheless, if a woman cannot bear a child, she won’t become less of a woman.

7) Poor quality of cervical mucus is a cause of infertility in women

Poor quality of cervical mucus can also lead to infertility. Painful sex, not being able to achieve orgasm, difficulties in getting pregnant etc. are all consequences of the poor quality of cervical mucus.

In fact, if the cervical mucus is not of the right consistency, it won’t assist the sperms to travel and hence act as a barrier. This is the reason the cervical mucus becomes a thick white discharge on the day of ovulation to help fertilization.

It is a natural phenomenon.

8) Uterine Fibroids make women infertile

Uterine fibroids are a dreadful thing that could happen to a woman. Fibroids occur due to unknown cancerous cells that get triggered in some manner.

They don’t spread and are benign but can lead to total blockage of the womb. It is like the surrounding muscle tissue invades the uterus.

They cause miscarriages and also make it compulsory to have a seizure operation.

9) Hormonal imbalance lead to infertility in women

Hormonal balance is vital for proper functioning of the body. The reproductive hormones include a GnRH gonadotrophin-releasing hormone, luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone.

Other female hormones under the control of these are estrogen, progesterone, and androgens. Hormones play a crucial role in the conception, and hence they need to be balanced.

10) Early menopause is another reason for infertility in women

Nowadays a lot is heard about precocious puberty. It is when a girl reaches puberty long before the right time around seven years instead of 13 years of age.

Similarly, there is a disease called perimenopause or early menopause. So if a woman gets early menopause, she becomes infertile.

It is shocking that research findings show that nowadays females of around 30 years are reaching menopause.

11) Increased prolactin hormone also can cause infertility in women

If you take any medication that can increase prolactin levels in your body, you should also consider supplementary therapy for combating the issue.

Some drugs like antipsychotic drugs may cause an elevated level of prolactin hormone. Prolactin suppresses other female hormones in a woman’s body.

12) Thyroid defects

A Thyroid gland problem affects the basal metabolic rate and hence can cause infertility in women.

Women with Thyroid disorders have a lot of complications in pregnancy even if they are fertile.

13) Eating disorders

Eating disorders like Anorexia or Bulimia lead to infertility in women. Also, an imbalanced diet during the fetal life might lead to infertility in women.

14) Athletic workout

Female athletes who work out vigorously develop masculine body structure and hence become infertile. The metabolism shifts to physical activities which inhibits reproductive system.

Athletes might experience amenorrhoea (absence of menstrual cycle), and this causes infertility in women.

15) Reproductive Tract problems due to DES

Women who take the drug DES when they are pregnant tend to give birth to girls who are infertile. This drug is not allowed during pregnancy.

16) Endometriosis

This is when the tissues that should grow in womb start spreading. It needs to be surgically treated.

It further complicates the situation by forming surgical uterine scars.

17) Uterine Scars

Scars in uterus lead to miscarriages and chemical pregnancies. It again is a cause of infertility in women.

Risk factors for infertility in women

These are the conditions or practices that make a woman vulnerable to infertility.

  1. As a woman ages, she is more prone to infertility. A female over 35 years of age not being able to conceive should see the doctor sooner than a 25-year-old.
  2. Weight plays a major role than the just figure. Weight-loss or gain affects the fertility of a woman. Obesity can cause infertility in women. Hence one needs to monitor her weight for more than looks.
  3. Smoking any stimulant like nicotine causes infertility in women. It affects their ovaries and also the womb in adverse ways. It makes the aging process faster. A pregnant woman is strongly advised against smoking.
  4. Stress is a known risk factor which increases the production of aging and depressing hormones. These, in turn, slow down your reproductive processes. Stress is an underrated risk factor for infertility in women.
  5. Alcoholism is a major risk factor for infertility in both men and women. Alcohol affects the brain and is a depressant. So it is a risk factor for infertility in women.
  6. Environmental factors such as contaminated water supply with heavy metals can cause infertility in women.
  7. Lifestyle habits like a sedentary lifestyle may cause obesity which in turn can cause infertility in women. One should lead an active life to have a healthy body and mind.
  8. Psychological reasons also cause infertility. Some women might be infertile because they don’t have a right perception towards pregnancy. Asexual thinking and a dislike for pregnancy and associated things might cause repeated miscarriages.

No matter how hopeless you feel, technology has advanced beyond imagination. Every cause of infertility can be treated and prevented. Assisted Reproductive Technologies ART has endless possibilities for couples who are dealing with infertility issues.

If you’re a trying to conceive, then the last word you want to hear is infertility. Infertility in women accounts for almost half of infertility cases around the globe.

Every couple hopes to conceive every time they try. As the days go by, doubts begin to linger in the minds. The woman fears that perhaps she is infertile and unable to have a baby. Such fears are not unfounded, but there is good news also. Nowadays medical research has made it possible for an increasing number of infertile women to have babies.

What is infertility?

Infertility is the inability to get pregnant even after repeated unprotected intercourse for a year.

Many people around the globe are dealing with this for various reasons. What is the probability of infertility in women? Around 1 in every six women is dealing with some infertility issue.

Not being able to conceive is considered a curse for the woman in many societies. It is incredibly depressing not to be able to carry a baby. However, with the advancing technology and techniques, the problem of infertility in women can be rectified now. Assisted Reproductive Technologies is one such solution.

What is infertility in women?

Infertility in women is the inability to conceive a baby even after unprotected sex for over twelve months.

Female infertility informally can also encompass the incidents of miscarriages, a chemical pregnancy, and other such cases that terminate spontaneously.

Types of infertility in women

  1. Primary infertility in women: Primary infertility in women is infertility which exists before conceiving even once. This may be due to genetic defects or other reproductive disorders. For a complete list of causes and risk factors of female infertility.
  2. Secondary infertility in women: Secondary infertility is when a woman is not able to conceive the second time. This happens when the first pregnancy creates some hostility for subsequent pregnancies. Uterine scars formed after surgery of the womb are one cause of secondary female infertility.
It may even be in the case if you had a blood group mismatch with your baby and now you have antibodies against your baby. This disorder is called Erythroblastosis Fetalis.
If a Rh-negative woman conceives a Rh-positive baby, she is exposed to Rh protein, which is a blood group protein present on the surface of your cells. The first baby is delivered normally. For the next Rh positive baby, the mother has antibodies which destroy the baby at an early stage. However, this is debatable whether it is an infertility issue any longer. It is secondary infertility only when the woman is unaware of it. Otherwise, the female is fertile.
  3. Sterility: Sterility is genetic or may be due to irreversible damage done to the female’s reproductive organs. There is no solution for this one which is possible inside the body. Sterility in women is an entirely abnormal reproductive organ or incapable reproductive organs. There are solutions to treat this kind of infertility. However, you will need to do them outside your body from a surrogate mother.
  4. Psychological infertility (asexuality) in women: A woman who psychologically doesn’t accept the fact that she is a woman or she should become a mother is asexual. While this may not be infertility entirely but apparently it is. Such women experience miscarriages repeatedly. It is essential for the mind and body to work in synchronization and only then harmony exists within the body.
  5. Unexplainable infertility: Sometimes the woman is healthy but small problems exist, and in combination, they make her infertile. The cause cannot be pinpointed.  This is unexplainable infertility in women.

Symptoms of infertility in women

  • Inability to conceive even after having regular sex for more than a year at various times
  • Irregular menstrual cycle
  • Dysmenorrhoea (painful periods) or amenorrhoea (absence of periods)
  • Developing male characteristics like facial and body hair
  • Frequent miscarriages

When to see a doctor for infertility in women?

  • When you experience the above symptoms.
  • If you find any other changes in your body like rashes on genital parts.
  • Changes in the menstrual cycle.
  • If you’ve had a medical history of any uterine surgeries.
  • Depending on age decide whether you need to see the doctor within half a year if you are between 25 – 35 years or can wait till a year if you are less than 25 years old. For women above 40 years of age, you need to visit the doctor without even a day’s delay.

Problems faced by infertile women

An infertile woman has to face many complications. Let’s have a look at those:
  1. Chronic depression: The society blames on the woman for her inability to conceive. It is nature’s will to give something or take something. Merely bearing a baby in her womb doesn’t define a body as a female. One should abhor such practices and stand up for the victims.
  2. Divorces and domestic violence: Even when the male partner is infertile people blame women. Countless marriages fall apart just because the female couldn’t bear a child. The financial burden of dealing with infertility is also often reasons for divorces.
  3. Social seclusion: An infertile woman feels embarrassed to go out and meet people or talk to colleagues and friends. Such social boycott could be mentally debilitating.
  4. Psychological problems: A woman suffering from infertility is subjected to torture and rebuking. She might even lose her self-confidence. Many women head to counselors and psychiatrists for talking about this. She might also develop epilepsy.
  5. Acute stress levels:Infertility tests and treatments are exhaustive. A woman often swings between hope and despair leading to acute stress levels. High stress also affects the ability to focus and remember things. Both emotional and physiological stress further hampers the body. Studies show that an infertile woman undergoes the same level of stress as that of an HIV or a cancer patient. Fertility drugs also cause forgetfulness.
  6. Insomnia: Once you are thinking of infertility day and night you might start experiencing insomnia. As the body’s biological clock gets affected, everything starts to fall off, and you might suffer a complete nervous breakdown.
  7. Appetite fluctuations: An infertile woman might not feel the urge to eat anything for hours. Appetite fluctuations happen because of the stress due to infertility issues.
  8. Anger and irritation: A woman dealing with infertility goes through something so unexplainable that only she knows how horrible it feels. She gets in her world of sadness. Even a slight problem can make her angry and irritated. It is not her fault entirely if she becomes unstable.
  9. Turning to drugs, alcohol and getting suicidal thoughts: Infertility in women has so many taboos associated with it that a woman is left with solitude and drugs. While some might be strong enough to steer away, others would give in such destructive measures.
  10. Disrupted sexual life: A couple dealing with infertility has to have sex like a cure rather than for pleasure. Sex loses its meaning for such couples. It may be painful and unsatisfying. The couple just becomes a baby making machine trying to get the parts do the production.

The Chinese practice of acupuncture has a cure for every disorder from depression to infertility. Acupuncture for infertility is not a new treatment. Women and men have been using it for ages.

Acupuncture for infertility involves the use of fine needles that are inserted at specific pressure points.

The acupuncture points for infertility balances the energy flowing. It corrects circulation and can even cure PCOS.

There are many other things that you need to consider before trying acupuncture. Each session of acupuncture for infertility treatment cost can be a pocket buster.

Similarly, if the cause of infertility requires surgery, then acupuncture won’t help much. When you have unexplained infertility, then you can try acupuncture.

Can Acupuncture Treat Infertility?

Acupuncture may help unless the cause of infertility is visible such as Endometriosis.

Women with an irregular period or inability to hold the fetus in the womb are the ones who may experience benefits.

The pros of acupuncture for infertility are that it is a natural methodology and painless. In sporadic case, the pricking needles can hurt you.

Acupuncture For Infertility
Acupuncture For Infertility

When you take herbs along with acupuncture, combined action increases the success rate. But a new acupuncturist can make the situation worse.

An acupuncturist has to locate the energy points of the particular person during acupuncture.

The blood flows towards the affected area and corrects the problem. Enough blood reaches the thin endometrial lining making it thicker and long-term.

Herbs can have allergic reactions and be antagonists. So it is important that you first take a trial of each herb individually.

You will have to trust whatever your expert says at times. So it is essential that you find out the best in the field in your area.

When to get acupuncture for Infertility?

You must remember that like every therapy acupuncture has some limitations. You need to opt for conventional therapies such as IVF or artificial insemination along with acupuncture.

Why acupuncture?

The success of IVF is not absolute, and acupuncture will reduce the chance of failure. If you are keen on getting pregnant fast with infertility, then take acupuncture before and after embryo transfer.

Some studies reveal that women who took both conventional and acupuncture treatment had a higher success rate.

How many acupuncture sessions are needed to get pregnant?

The more you do, the better are the results of the practice. Acupuncture for fertility how often cannot be uniform for all.

The first trimester is most risky and has the highest chance of miscarriage. Once a woman crosses this period her risk of miscarriage drop drastically.

Fertility acupuncture needs to continue for the first three months of pregnancy. The frequency of acupuncture sessions will reduce as time passes.

Acupuncture for fertility: Where do the needles go?

Acupuncture and fertility are not merely as medicine for infection. It is more like a supportive therapy.

There are several risks of acupuncture for fertility that need consideration too. When you are pregnant, the acupuncture points in the abdominal area contraindicate.

Your abdominal area including acupuncture points as Spleen 6, Bladder 60 and 67, stomach 12 become sensitive. That means that any acupuncture needle going in those points can lead to miscarriage.

Thus, the acupuncture fertility points of gallbladder 21, large intestine 4 and stomach 12 are also not safe after pregnancy.

Your therapy has to start from few weeks before conception and continue for the nearly same time after it.

The skill and experience of an acupuncturist for infertility are primary factors that will determine the outcome of the treatment.

Acupuncture points for infertility are all throughout the body.

Do acupuncture for infertility needles hurt?

The fertility points for acupuncture are present inside and outside your body. On an average, during a session, you will have 15 needles inserted.

The feeling is painless and sometimes slightly pricking. It depends on your pain threshold. As the energy distribution across the meridians becomes normal the pain will subside.

Good practitioners use sterile one-time acupuncture needles. Some severe cases may need to get a mild current pass through the needles. It will not feel like a shock or even current at all.

How does acupuncture treatment work?

The traditional Chinese explanation for the success of acupuncture for infertility is correcting disharmony. Energy flow inside the body is along the meridians.

They are imaginary lines to divide the energy flow pattern in the body. When there is is disharmony inside the body energy escapes the meridians and scatters.

Acupuncture restores the energy flow through meridians.

Though there is not much research to back acupuncture, some explanation exists. According to latest studies, it is the secretion of painkillers namely beta-endorphins that helps.

When a needle pricks a point in your body, pain-relieving chemicals are released.

Other than that it also leads to chemical reactions at the point to help cure the disorder.

Can acupuncture for fertility help?

There are many reasons for infertility such as tube defects, anovulation, and disorders. Acupuncture is ideal for patients with unexplained infertility.

Acupuncture cannot help in cases of the physical barrier infertility. Similarly, PCOS, Endometriosis, and polyps require treatment before supportive therapy.

Spasms and incorrect blood flow are the main areas where acupuncture helps. Women with problems in the menstrual cycle such as high hormonal level or thin endometrial lining can try it.

Thyroid imbalance can also cause infertility in women. Acupuncture can correct both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism.

Not only for women but there is acupuncture therapy for infertility in men.

Acupuncture can:

  • Increase sperm count
  • Cure painful sex or muscle contraction problems
  • Correct thyroid, reproductive hormones
  • Increase the number of ova produced during fertility therapy
  • Tune the menstrual cycle
  • Reduce stress
  • Improve ovulation and treat period disorders
  • Treat Polycystic ovary syndrome

How much does acupuncture treatment for acupuncture cost?

A good acupuncturist needs few consultation sessions before starting the treatment. During this stage, she would ask you about your general health and check pulse rate.

This will help her understand the cause of the imbalance of energy in your body.

Compared to any other infertility treatment acupuncture is less expensive. The first few sessions can take as much as 100$, and subsequent ones will reduce to half of it or about 80$.

What are the risks of acupuncture for fertility?

There are not any risks for acupuncture other than getting it done wrong. If your acupuncturist does not know where and how to do acupuncture, then it has adverse effects.

Inexperienced acupuncture treatment can frustrate you further and elevate stress. Not only the frustration but the pricking can hurt and cause some irritation and itching.

Similarly, use of common needles even when only slightly pricked can lead to many diseases. While acupuncture itself has negligible risks a poor, an acupuncturist can be harmful.

Acupuncture during IVF and fertility treatment

Experts recommend that you must get infertility acupuncture for six months. That will include the three months before and three months after IVF.

Before the fertility treatment commences, acupuncture will balance the hormones and correct ovulation problems.

Once the embryo transfer occurs the sustainability of pregnancy is the target of acupuncture.

After three months of conception, the pregnancy has a very low risk of undergoing miscarriage. Your partner will only get acupuncture before you get pregnant. After that, it will just be you going to the sessions.

There have been reports where women conceive after acupuncture treatment after conventional fertility therapies failed.

What happens during acupuncture session?

Your therapist will discuss your medical history and also ask you about your menstrual cycle. They may inquire about your partner’s reproductive status too.

After the consultation, the acupuncturist will figure out the number of sessions needed and supportive therapies. You will have to make some diet and lifestyle changes.

During each coming session, you will lie inside a comfortable room with scent sticks if they please you. Some of your clothing has to go off.

Clean, sterile needles will go at specific points inside and over your body. Whether or not you can opt to eliminate some points will either be at your own risk or not allowed.

You will feel a sense of calmness take over you. One can sleep or close eyes and lie down during a session. If you are with an expert trained well none of the prickings will wake you.

Is acupuncture recognized and recommended by medical professionals?

There is ambiguity regarding the evidence to support success is acupuncture. Some doctors don’t regard it as a way to cure infertility.

Others may accept it only to the extent of being a calming and mind-body connection procedure.

Naysayers consider nothing more than other massage therapies. Just like the relaxation during yoga, stretching and massage acupuncture calms down nerves.

And the needles only make you aware and sensitize the particular area.

The success rates point out towards its effectiveness whether or not proven. The acupuncturists are registered and licensed in some countries, and it is not voodoo or magic.

Male infertility is a rising concern. More and more young couples are knocking at the doors of fertility clinics in search of a baby. So what are the causes of infertility in men?

We spoke some of the leading experts on this issue. According to them, there are broadly 15 causes of infertility in males.

Causes of infertility in men
Causes of infertility in men

Causes Of Infertility In Men

  1. Impotence: The male organ loses its erection before the climax. In worse cases, the male organ doesn’t erect at all. Medicines like sildenafil citrate relax the blood vessels and give repeated erections to the male member. However, they pose a risk of a heart attack so one has to be careful while having them. Drugs such as marijuana, opium, and nicotine cause impotence. Smoking cigarettes can lead to zero sperm count condition which is irreversible male infertility.
  2. Inflammation of blood vessels of the testis: This may be due to infection or due to problems in the tissue surrounding the testis. This makes it difficult for the seminal fluid with the sperms to reach the urethra. This condition is known as ‘Varicocele’. The blood vessels prevent sperm formation and also make sex painful.
  3. Discharge incapacity: Either the sperm is not produced, or not discharged out of the urethra. It may be that the male has a good sperm count but the fluid instead of coming out goes inside the body in the opposite direction. This is retrograde ejaculation. Any spinal injuries or bladder operations can cause this to happen as a consequence. This is a treatable condition. For treatment, male fluid collected from the testes directly and injected into the female’s vagina.
  4. Erectile dysfunction: In this condition, a male is not able to hold his penile erection for long at times. There may be PE or no discharge at all and simply the male fluid oozes out and drips off. The seminal fluid must go deep in the vagina as the fertilization takes place in the fallopian tube. This causes infertility in men.
  5. Sexually Transmitted Diseases: Infections like sexually transmitted diseases STDs can make a man infertile. The pathogens or the symptoms might block the vas deferens (sperm canal) or degenerate the phallus as in genital herpes. The rashes make sex painful.
  6. Physiological causes of infertility in men: The temperature of scrotal sacs has to be around 2° C lower than the body temperature. This is because sperms need a lower temperature during storage. If the scrotal sacs are too close to the body, then the temperature might not be suitable, and hence the sperms will become dysfunctional.
  7. Hormonal misbalance: Hormones are ultimately responsible for the entire functioning of the body. Sex hormones or reproductive hormones are steroidal (have cholesterol in their ring) or peptide (made of proteins) in nature. Even a nanogram change can lead to devastating effects on a gamete cell. Androgen is the main male hormone that is responsible for libido and other sexual activities. If problems in testicular cells affect sperm production, then infertility in men occurs.
  8. Autoimmune disorders: Antibodies can develop against one’s own sperms. Autoimmune means that the body gets defensive against its own self. Due to carcinogenic (cancer-causing) agents body becomes defensive against its own sperm cells. The immune system will destroy sperms and male infertility will be the consequence.
  9. Psychological causes of infertility in men: Homosexuals, asexual, and other psychologically disturbed men might abhor normal sex. In such a case he will not be able to penetrate into his partner’s vagina. The brain will trigger disgust and eventually, he will stop. Such men fall into the category of infertile men.
  10. There is a huge impact of the psychological interpretation of sex that affects a man’s ability to procreate. A lot of childhood activities such as treating a boy as a girl or child sexual abuse have detrimental effects. It can even lead to infertility in men.
  11. Prescriptions that cause infertility in men: Hormonal therapies, chemotherapeutic drugs, antifungal drugs, medicines for ulcers, and antipsychotic drugs cause infertility in men. They reduce male sperm count and hence lead to infertility in men.
  12. Metabolic disorders: Celiac disease is a syndrome in which the patient becomes sensitive to gluten. A gluten-free diet can reverse male infertility due to the disease.
  13. Genetics causes of infertility in men: If there is a chromosomal aberration (defect in structure) in the sex chromosomes it causes infertility in men. They are responsible for determining gender and affect sexual characteristics. The chromosome inside the cell guides and is responsible for every action. If the chromosome is defective, then it is obvious that the function will not be proper. Gene replacement therapies for genetically infertile men are being explored.
  14. Blocked tubes for sperm transport: The sperm goes through many ducts from the testis to the urethra from where they have the common passage shared by urine duct. If there is a blockage in any of these tubes then even normal sperms won’t reach the urethra. So infertility in men will be the outcome. This is the same principle applied for permanent sterilization in which the tubes are cut and tied in vasectomy.
  15. Tumors and cancers of reproductive parts: Tumor in the prostate gland or any other reproductive organ can make a male infertile. It is very evident that a tumor will hamper the particular organ’s function. But also as it grows in size, it will pressurize and crush the other surrounding area. Eventually, the removal of the organ will be necessary to prevent further damage.
  16. Anatomical defects in reproductive parts: Chronic untreatable infertility is due to Cyrptochiodism or Hypospadias. Cryptorchidism is the condition in which testis remains in the abdomen and don’t descend in scrotal sacs. Hypospadias is the condition in which the urethra is under the male organ so it can’t deliver the sperms. For this artificial therapy is necessary to treat the cause of male infertility.

Risk factors for infertility in men

  1. Alcoholism: Chronic alcoholism in men leads to impotence. The sperm count goes far below the normal level and men lose vigor and libido. The virility of an alcoholic man reduces dramatically.
  2. Smoking more than permissible amounts: Nicotine in cigarettes causes stimulation of the adrenaline hormone. Nicotine leaves to infertility in men. Only in the case of infertility, the effect of smoking on men is worse than on women.
  3. Taking Drugs or Drug Abuse: Drugs like mari-juana and cocaine lead to infertility in men. Steroidal preparations for accelerating muscle growth can also cause infertility in men.
  4. Environmental impact: Being exposed to different kinds of pollutants or loud noise can impact sexual performance. Thus it affects fertility in men.
  5. Exposure to laptop radiations and other thermal radiation: Scrotal sacs or say testis need a lower temperature than the body temperature. A study was recently published in an international journal about ‘men who keep their laptops on their laps tend to have lower sperm counts’. This is because the laptop battery radiates heat and thus heats the region and affects sperm production. Any other heat sources like using dryers for genital parts can also lead to infertility in men.
  6. Stress: Emotional and physical stress beyond a limit has direct influence over the limbic system. The limbic system controls emotions and sexual desires. This can affect libido and might lead to infertility in men.
  7. X-ray radiations: Radiations are harmful to any part of the body. X-Ray radiations can lead to triggering of oncogenes (inert cancer genes) and lead to tumors of the male sex glands.
  8. Weight mismanagement: Obesity has adverse effects and so does abnormally low weight. Just like other things weight fluctuations and imbalance can affect fertility in men.
  9. Masturbation: It is the act of stimulating yourself sexually by caressing genital areas and performing the virtual sexual act. It adversely affects the virility and libido of a man. Medical scholars, advice men to stop practicing Masturbation. Erectile dysfunction, impotence, and infertility are ill effects of masturbation. Masturbation alone has no benefits. All the viral articles praising masturbation are actually good effects of sex.
  10. Exposure to industrial effluents and heavy metals: Exposure to industrial waste like benzene, chloroform, or heavy metals like mercury, lead, etc. can lead to infertility in men.

Note that age is not a risk factor in male infertility unlike in females where age is a key risk factor of infertility.

Male Infertility Treatments

  1. Medications for treating infertility in men: Hormonal therapies, vigor producing drugs, lubricating jellies, etc. are treatments for infertility in men. To know about them continue reading till the end.
    • The first step is the collection of sperm from seminal fluid. Doctors might extract sperms from the testis if there is a tubal blockage hampering transport of sperm.
    • Sperms are then injected into the female’s vagina or directly placed in her fallopian tube.
    • If female partner has a problem too then IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) is an alternative.
    • Intracytoplasmic injection of sperm genes into egg cell cures infertility due to sperms not fertilizing the egg.
  2. Assisted reproductive technology ART for treating infertility in men: ART for infertility in men includes all supportive therapies for infertility in men. An artificial support is given to help a man father a child.
  3. Surgery for treating infertility in men: Surgery for removing the tubal blockage or treating varicoceles treats infertility in men. Surgery is the only way if sterilization treatment like vasectomy (cutting of vas deferens) is the cause of infertility.
  4. Counseling and support for treating infertility in men: Counseling sessions and lifestyle change are alternative treatments for infertility in men. Home remedies are safe ways of treating infertility in men. Lifestyle changes go a long way to actually increase vigor and fertility in men.

If treatment for infertility in men doesn’t help, then the doctor might recommend you to take the sperms from a donor or for adoption.

Medications for infertility in men

      1. Drugs for treating sex problems: For erectile dysfunction or impotence a prescription for sildenafil or Stendra cures infertility in men. These drugs will dilate blood vessels and help hold erections for longer. Doctors prescribe lubricants or jellies or even oils for better sex performance.
      2. Hormonal supplements: If there is a problem in androgen (male sex hormone) production then hormone therapies treat infertility. These are steroidal preparations. If used without guidance their complications are beyond treatment.
      3. Immunosuppressive drugs: If the body is producing antibodies against own sperms then doctors give immunosuppressive drugs. It is for suppressing the antibodies’ production against own sperms.
      4. Antibiotics for curing STDs to treat infertility in men: Antibiotic therapy will treat the STD infection to cure infertility in men. Your fertility will restore after treatment of the particular STD.

Home Remedies for infertility in men

For supporting your medical therapies for infertility in men, you can do these home remedies along:

      • Have sex more often when your partner has ovulated and is fertile
      • Take a healthy diet rich in beta-carotene, folic acid, zinc and omega fatty acids to enhance sperm production
      • There are sex exercises done for enhancing the vigor

Lifestyle changes for infertility in men

These are things that one can take up as lifestyle changes for treating infertility in men

      1. Limit your alcohol and entertainment drugs. They are the main lifestyle habits that cause infertility in men.
      2. Stop activities like masturbation which have nothing good. It is sex that you enjoy and masturbation alone is not helping you.
      3. Exercise and do not sit at a stretch in a single place for hours. Sitting for long hours heats your scrotal sacs and doesn’t allow air circulation.
      4. Eat healthy and maintain a healthy body weight. Fat around the belly affects testosterone (male sex hormone) production.
      5. Do not use jellies, saliva, Astroglide etc. while having sex. They tend to affect sperm count and quality adversely.
      6. Do not go for sauna, jacuzzi and hot showers very frequently.

Complications of treatment of infertility in men

      1. Surgeries for treating infertility in men have a lot of side effects if not done by a medical expert
      2. Treatment duration is long and recovery also takes time
      3. Relationship and social problems due to taboos
      4. Financially demanding treatments

As our last word, we would suggest that the world has a lot of homeless orphans. Adopting a child is better than bringing a new one from donors.

Even if you want your own offspring taking sperm from someone and getting a baby from surrogacy is just the same as adoption. Adoption is a noble deed.

Infertility is a dreadful thing to happen to anyone especially for those who are just entering their reproductive phase of life. It is very rare that normal physiology restores itself. If you’re wondering how to avoid infertility in males, then read on…

How To Avoid Infertility In Males?

Here are some precautions for preventing infertility in men:

  1. Always have safe sex: No matter how high you are on life, wear protection before you make love to your partner. Having safe sex will guard you against genital herpes, gonorrhea, HIV, and other STDs or venereal diseases. The STDs can make one infertile and are terrible to experience.
  2. Plan a balanced diet: Have foods that are rich in omega fatty acids like Chia seeds, cod liver oil, soya chunks, and others. Also, have a wholesome diet that has all vitamins and minerals. Every nutrient serves a purpose in your body. Also try including peppers, Oysters, garlic and other aphrodisiacs to enhance your vigor and libido.
  3. Wear proper underclothing: Whether it is the hottest month of the year don’t subtract the layer of underclothing like supporters. Wear loose undergarments. Always wear a supporter while playing or hitting the gym. They protect the testis from shocks one might get during vigorous activity.
  4. Don’t be an alcohol addict: The Department of Health has set the amount of alcohol consumption limit for a week to 14 units for men. This amount is approximately one and a half bottle of wine or seven glasses of 175 ml wine. Alcohol leads to zero sperm count hence one must strictly drink within limited amounts. Also, give a break to your liver alternate days for recovering from the detoxifying action.
  5. Don’t smoke: Men metabolize nicotine faster than females but still are more harmed by it than a woman. So don’t smoke more than 4 cigarettes a day. Smoking produces infertility in men.
  6. Don’t coitus interruptus or use non-standardized sex toys: Masturbation has many harmful effects on the reproductive and social well-being of a person. It makes men lose their vigor and sex drive. It lowers sperm count and drains you of energy and also other nutrients. One should refrain from masturbation as it is addictive. Also, don’t use cheap sex toys as they are potent to cause damages. You’d come to know only when going to the doctor will be the only choice.
  7. Protect your genital parts from radiations: Always take a second opinion before going for any radiation therapies. Keep your mobile phones, laptops, etc. away from your body to avoid exposure to heat and other radiations. They affect sperm production.
  8. Manage a constant and healthy weight: Exercise, keep changing postures, and give jerks to your body to prevent infertility. Sitting in a place for long hours can affect you and cause infertility problems. Also, a constant body is more important than having six or eight-pack abs. Get your body mass index BMI checked by a doctor or use online BMI calculators and keep it maintained in the normal range.
  9. The stress of every form should be at bay: There is no benefit derived from taking stress about anything. Mental tension is a potential hazard that can cause you damage even if you are suffering from nothing. Stress especially emotional stress is the cause of infertility in men.
  10. Think hundred times before getting a sterilization treatment: Once you get a vasectomy done it is tough to restore back the original organ structure. And anyway once you get a surgery done, there will be scars, and they pose you a high risk of becoming infertile.

Follow these simple things, and you will not have to dread from something almost every 1 out 6 couples are facing.

How can men test infertility at home?

  1. If you are not able to make a baby with your partner you know, there are chances that you’ve male infertility issues.
  2. Check for the symptoms of infertility in men like erectile dysfunction, pain in testis, and painful sex with no climax.
  3. You can even examine your sperm if it is not clear white or crème and is towards yellow or green then you need to see the doctor.
  4. If you see sore patches or rashes on your genitals, then you might have or can have infertility problems in the future.
  5. You can take a home sperm test for detecting infertility issues undetectable by the naked eye like low sperm count (oligospermia).

Read on to find out everything to know about home sperm fertility tests.

Home sperm test

What is a home sperm test?

A home sperm fertility test helps you to find out your sperm count and fertility. This male fertility test came to the market only a few years ago.

How to use a home sperm fertility test?

  1. Collect your fluid just when you are about to discharge.
  2. Mix it with the test solution of the home sperm fertility test.
  3. Add around four drops of this mix in the test well in the home sperm fertility test kit.
  4. Wait for ten minutes to read the results.

How does home sperm fertility test work?

  1. Sperm fertility test has a solution that can react with the sperm head proteins.
  2. This protein is exclusively present in the head of the sperm.
  3. A normal sperm will react with the home sperm fertility test solution and give color. This way occurrence of the result line indicates the sperm count.

How to read the results of home sperm fertility test?

You get instructions manual with the home sperm fertility test which has the specifications about the results.

What is a positive result of home sperm fertility test?

A general result display is a colored line shows the results are positive and your sperm count is above 35 million per milliliter. And so you are less likely to have infertility.

What is a negative result of home sperm fertility test?

A blank result window is for a negative result. It shows that your sperm count is below 20 million per milliliter. Hence you have an infertility problem.

What are other home sperm fertility tests available for testing infertility in men?

A digital home sperm fertility test called Trak is also available to test infertility in men at home.

What are the advantages of home sperm fertility test?

  1. You don’t have to go anywhere and so all that awkwardness in seeing a sexologist doesn’t stop you from testing infertility.
  2. Also, it can be done at any time of the day unlike going to the doctor.

However, it is highly recommended that one gets tested by a medical professional to diagnose infertility in men.

Male Fertility Test By A Doctor

About 50% of infertile couples have infertility in the male partner. Out of ignorance, only 20% of infertility in men issues reach to doctors. That is 80% of men come to know about infertility late or never get themselves tested.

Being a man it is your responsibility to ensure that you get yourself a male fertility test if you and your partner are not able to conceive.

  1. Discussion of medical history related to infertility in men: When you will go to the infertility clinic the doctor will ask you about your medical history. It includes any surgeries of the testis, tumors, and your sexual habits. Also, you’ll have to do the homework for answers to questions such as:
      • How long you take to reach the peak?
      • How much volume of sperm do you discharge?
      • What is the general erection achieving time?
      • Do you wear briefs often?
      • Do you go for jacuzzi or sauna frequently?
    • Physical examination: Physical examination for testing infertility in men is the inspection of external genitalia. The doctor will examine the male organ and scrotal sacs. He will also check any swelling or varicoceles (inflammation of blood vessels around testis). Don’t feel shy of the sexologist or infertility doctor. It is essential that you get the right diagnosis.
    • Spem analysis: After this, the doctor might ask you to give a sample of your fluid for analysis. It is the advanced level of home sperm fertility test. The analysis tests infertility in men when no cause is detected by external examination. Things checked are sperm count, motility, immune reactions, and shape of sperms.
    • Sperm mucus penetration test: The test evaluates the ability of sperms to move through vaginal mucus. Your partner’s cervical mucus mixed with your fluid is used for the test. The sample collection is by masturbation. You must not discharge for 2 days before the test but not longer than 5 days. It is possible that the cervical mucus of your partner has antibodies against your sperms. Another condition is when your own body produces antibodies against your sperms.
    • Sperm penetration assay: Even if sperms reach the egg they need to cross the covering. A rare male infertility test is to check sperm penetration. Hamster test is like the preparation of IVF. The eggs and sperms are incubated together. Results calculate the number of sperms that penetrate the egg.
    • Blood test: If a doctor suspects a sex disease then he might take a blood sample and test for diseases like HIV. These diseases can affect vigor, libido, and also can cause infertility in men. An immunoassay is done to detect any antibodies forming against your sperms.
    • Genetic test: A genetic test for infertility in men is for detecting any infertility that is genetically inherited in a man. It might include testing the chromosome (karyotype). This test detects the sex chromosome aberrations that cause infertility in men.
    • Hormone balance test: Male hormones the androgens are responsible for all sexual activities of men. If sperm count or motility is not normal then doctors test FSH, LH, and Prolactin levels. Hormone tests encompass checking levels and secretion functions. Further treatment involves hormone supplements for restoring reversible infertility in men.
    • Biopsy of testes: The doctor might take a needle and extract testes contents. The doctor will send it for tests. It will evaluate whether the problem is in sperm production or sperm transport. If the sperm production is regular then you are likely to have blocked sperm ducts. This test helps pinpoint the cause of infertility in men.
    • Urine test after sperm discharge: If you have a problem of retrograde ejaculation then this is the test doctor will suggest for you. If your fluid doesn’t come out and instead goes into your bladder, then your post-discharge urine will have sperms. It is a test for infertility in men.
    • Ultrasound of scrotal sacs: The production of sperms and storage of them in scrotal sacs is essential for fertility in men. An ultrasound detects whether your testes are at the right temperature. It will also help the doctor to see whether they have descended to the right level.
    • Sperm agglutination test: Agglutination is forming a lump of any particle such as antibodies to kill bacteria. Sperms can also club together and become stationary or slow. The vaginal tract contrasts with the environment inside male reproductive organs. Sperm agglutination test checks for such a reaction to treat the cause of it.
    • Rectal Ultrasound: A doctor might insert a microscope or a camera in a tube through your rectum. It is to see the internal arrangement of your prostate gland, urinary bladder, etc. It will detect any tubal blockages.
    • Hypo-osmotic swelling: Sperms are cells with the half amount of genetic material. All cells need a specific concentration of surrounding fluids maintained by buffers in the body. If the osmolarity changes then the cells either take in water and swell or exude and shrink. A live sperm in a low sugar solution will swell. The test is an indirect assay of the ratio of live sperms to dead or abnormal ones.
    • Acrosome Reaction: The sperm acrosome reaction is essential for fusion of genetic material. When the sperm encounters egg it must prevent more sperms fusing with it. The reactions between the egg and sperm lock the egg membrane towards other sperms. Faulty acrosome reaction causes polyspermy and genetic defects.
    • Vasography: X-ray examination of the tubes carrying sperms reveals any blocks. Vas deferens carry sperms between testes and urethra. There can be a leak of sperms or any obstruction in the pathway.
    • Hemizona Assay: The covering of egg has corona radiata. It is like spokes inside out of a wheel. A nonviable or defective egg otherwise useless is cut in half to perform the test.
There may be even more advanced infertility tests for men that come up by the time you read this article. All you need to do is know everything about your sex life and head to a qualified doctor.

Male infertility conjures up an image of an emaciated man. But nothing could be farther from the truth.

While infertility in women is a widely discussed topic, men suffer a more adverse crisis when it comes to their infertility.

The reality is more than 50% of couples who have not been able to make babies are actually suffering due to the male partner being infertile (Male Infertility).

A man’s inability to make a woman pregnant can be devastating for his self-esteem. And the more terrible issue is that a man feels more shy to go to see a doctor to meet a doctor to discuss infertility.

Unqualified quacks take advantage of such men and exploit them beyond imagination. Their unprofessional treatments only worsen the situation. Men find it even more difficult to talk about infertility.

    So here’s the deal…

We will explain to you what exactly is infertility in males, symptoms, and also the various ways you can treat infertility.

    What is infertility?

Infertility is the inability to reproduce even after having unprotected sex for more than a year. The technical definition might have some clauses to add on with respect to age.

Difference between fertility in men and women?

A man stays fertile for his entire life virtually. Women experience menopause at the age of 40, where her periods undergo cessation, and her reproductive phase ends.

Men don’t undergo or rarely undergo such a situation of andropause. So a male has a longer time to treat infertility and also to stay reproductively active.

    Male Infertility
    Male Infertility

    What is infertility in men?

Male Infertility is the inability of making a woman pregnant. It is only when provided the fact that he has frequent sex with her for more than a year without using contraceptives.

A male needs to perform the following reproductive functions flawlessly to be fertile:

    1. Produce a sufficient number of sperms more than 39 million per discharging of the fluid
    2. Store the sperms until discharge
    3. 60% of the sperms must be in the right form, and 40% of them should have proper mobility
    4. Sperm should have the enzymes and the energy to fertilize the egg
    5. Have the erection of male organ by relaxing the blood vessels of the area and allowing blood to gush in and make the organ hard and erect
    6. Hold the erection for the entire duration of having sex and be able to insert it till the right depth
    7. Deliver the sperms deep inside the female’s vagina

If there is a problem in any of these, it can lead to men infertility.

Problems that lead to infertility in men are

    1. Low sperm count
    2. Erectile dysfunctionSperms are not of proper shape and size
    3. Organs are deformed
    4. Hormonal imbalance exists and hence affects reproductive processes
    5. Lubricating fluids are not produced
    6. Sex diseases
    7. Premature discharge

    Types of Male infertility

    1. Primary infertility in men: Primary infertility in men is basic infertility in a man. It may be because of a single problem in the male reproductive system while the rest functions are going on normally. A man has an erectile organ, produces sperms and delivers the sperm deep in a woman’s vagina. Yet he is not fertile for reasons that cannot be diagnosed. It could be that the sperm count is very low or sperms are not of the right shape and size. In such situations, it gets challenging to identify the real reason for not being able to make a baby.
    2. Sterility in men: Sterility in men is when the testes have not descended in the scrotal sacs (testis bags). It is called cryptorchidism. It is a genital defect. Sterility may also be in cases where the organ has other deformities or has erectile dysfunction. In such cases, the male partner’s fluid is artificially injected into the woman’s vagina. A low sperm count makes the sperm ineffective. In such a case seminal fluid from a donor is the solution for male infertility. Further treatments are also available if the problem is still not resolved.
    3. Psychological infertility in men: Men who hate sex in every manner might be infertile apparently. However, they are very much capable of procreation once they got out of the psychological dilemma. This is the case of homosexuality. It is less common in men as an infertility type.

    Symptoms of infertility in men

    1. Problems in having sex like PE or very less fluid volume
    2. Pain and swelling in scrotal sacs
    3. Abdominal pain and night falls
    4. The sense of smell reduces
    5. Female partner is not getting pregnant
    6. Gynecomastia that is the development of breast and mammary glands in male
    7. Reduced secondary sexual characters like facial and body hair
    8. Burning or itching in the organ and surrounding region

When do you need to see the doctor for infertility in men?

Once you’ve crossed a year of trying to make babies and have failed it is time to see the doctor. If you had sex with multiple partners, someone might be suffering from a sexually transmitted disease. You need to meet the doctor soon even before twelve months.

Other factors to consider before going to an infertility clinic:

    1. Having problems while having sex
    2. If you have had sterilization treatments like a vasectomy
    3. When you have any swelling or feel clump in the genital areas
    4. If your testes region was ever exposed to shocks during accidents

Overstressing about a problem makes things more complicated. So just relax and hold all your pieces together it’s not the end of the world.

As soon as a woman starts thinking of starting a family, she starts having doubts about her fertility. If you’re reading this article, it means you’re also wondering how to prevent infertility in female?

Many times, our lifestyle choices like smoking and drinking create infertility problems. ????

Good thing is that we can address these with a little thought and planning.

Here are the precautions to take for avoiding infertility in women:

How to prevent infertility in female?
How to prevent infertility in female?
    1. Maintain hygiene during menstruation: It is essential to keep yourself clean all the time. However, during your periods, you are even more prone to infections. So change your pads often and keep the area clean. Otherwise, it will be a house of bacteria and chlamydia.
    2. Wear tampons and never insert hard things in vagina: In usual days wear tampons and keep the vaginal area dry. Also never insert a hard thing inside your vagina as you might tear the tissues. Don’t get inspired by movies to try weird love games.
    3. Consume alcohol in allowed doses: The Department of Health allows women to have around 12 units or a bottle of wine in an entire week. And for a pregnant woman, it is only 1-2 units a week. Give a break to your liver in between by not drinking on an alternative day. You owe it your body.
    4. Cut down smoking: Women cannot metabolize nicotine very rapidly and hence should not smoke more than 2-3 cigarettes a day. It is, however, ideal that you completely stop smoking once you’ve decided to bear a baby. Smoking adversely affects the baby’s mental development and growth.
    5. Keep stress out: Any stress can change the menstrual cycle pattern and hence is detrimental to reproductive health. It can even cause infertility in women if goes beyond the threshold.
    6. Have a balanced diet: Eating the right thing is necessary for every health aspect. Eat foods that are rich in good cholesterol and have the entire set of vitamins and minerals. One should limit the intake of caffeinated products and other junk food.
    7. Stay away from Drugs: Drugs like LSD are very damaging to the body and hence for the menstrual cycle too. They can affect ovulation patterns in quality and quantity. Thus stay away from drugs.
    8. Don’t indulge in coitus interruptus or use sex toys: Coitus interruptus not a good practice. Avoid the urge of giving in the desire of trying it. Once you insert something in there and if by chance it tears your tissue there is no coming back after that. Inappropriate sex toys might loosen your vaginal tissues. You also risk infections. All of this can make you sexually weak.
    9. Manage your weight for more than just looks: Don’t allow your weight to fluctuate abnormally from East to the west. Maintain a range and a healthy one and stick to it. Obesity affects menstrual cycle badly so stay in shape.
    10. Have protected sex: Using condoms isn’t a much general practice amongst women. Women tend to rely on contraceptive pills. They are hormonal shots which affect the normal gland secretions. This is the reason for the acne outbreak, intense cramps, vomiting, hair growth and other side effects. And the dangerous emergency contraceptives shoot hormones to a sky scrapping level. Under normal conditions, that level is never touched. So be careful about who do you make out with and find out a suitable contraceptive for you. Infertility in women due to sexual diseases is a double pain in the neck.

Following these simple steps, you will never have to regret later sitting in an infertility clinic.

Complications of treating infertility in women

The complications of infertility treatments are far worse in females than males:

    1. Superovulation can cause a physiological imbalance: The hormonal shots given for treating infertility in women cause superovulation. This is the ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. Unlike in a normal female, your body will mature more than 1 ova (egg) at a time. This is the reason why females who undergo infertility treatments produce triplet and twins.
    2. Surgery can cause spotting: You might experience moderate to heavy bleeding for many days after infertility treatments. Untimely spontaneous spotting can be a very problematic issue.
    3. Infertility treatments are financially taxing: The cost of infertility treatments for females is very high. It will shake your budget for months.
    4. Recovery and testing will take time: How long does it take to treat infertility in women? All the testing and treatments can last for anything between three to six months. And recovery will take time depending on the kind of treatment done.
    5. Cramps, pain, and swelling in abdominal cavity: After invasive treatments for infertility in women you are likely to experience cramps and pain for weeks. Even the hormonal therapies have such side effects that can cause long-term discomfort.
    6. You might conceive twins: I don’t think this is a complication!! But if you’re not ready for more than one kid then this may be taxing. And to note getting an abortion of a child while allowing the other to grow is risky for the babies and the mom.
    7. There is a risk if premature labor, low birth weight or even developmental abnormalities when you undertake infertility treatments for females.
CAUTION: There are undercover rackets in the IVF industry who steal eggs. These unscrupulous people culture these eggs and sell them off without any consent letter. You should always go to reputed treatment centers and be aware of what’s going on with your body

We stand for every woman who is going through a hard time of her life. It is absolutely fine to not want to undergo infertility treatment and rather opt for adoption.

Adopting the orphans is better than being a part of this baby making business.

At the same time, it is very human to want a little one who has carry your genes.

Whatever be the case it is solely the decision of the couple and no one other than them has the right to interfere in what they decide.
